Introduction: What to know about Digital Law & Order- By Raina
Welcome everyone to Digital Law & Order: By Raina, a blog which focuses on exploring how social media is impacting the future of the United States Criminal Justice System. This blog will dive deeper into the fast growing connection between everyday digital platforms and our real-world legal systems. Social media initially was meant to be used for communication, entertainment, etc. But now it also plays a role all throughout our justice system, such as; investigations, court cases, public opinion, and police-community relations. As a graduating Criminal Justice student, I saw it fitting to focus on the justice system and how online platforms influence crime, law enforcement practices, and the fairness of the justice system. This blog will string together class concepts to real-world criminal justice issues, especially current events.
This Blog will cover an array of topics, with every week covering a new topic. A few of the topics you can expect include; the rise of cybercrime and how criminals use digital platforms. The problem of online radicalization and how extremists recruit through social networks. The effectiveness of crime prevention campaigns on social media platforms. How/ if social media causes juror bias, and sways public opinion during high-profile cases. Ethical concerns surrounding digital surveillance and privacy rights. The societal impact of the true crime media and how it shapes perceptions of justice. And much more!
The purpose and goal of this blog is to critically analyze both the benefits and risks of social media in criminal justice. To discover and find how technology can aid in transparency and public safety. Also to examine how social media can spread mass misinformation or create unfair bias, because lets be honest you see this almost more than the actual truth. Weekly I will reference course materials and apply them to real-life criminal justice topics. This is to help anybody understand how the justice system must adapt in a highly connected digital world. To discover what the future of crimes justice holds, we will apply social media as both continue to evolve every single day.
